The Lair of the White Worm 1988
Terése Flynn’s review:
It starts off like a creepy mystery, set out in the English countryside. Then BAM! Jesus on the cross with a huge serpent coiled around him, nuns getting raped, blood, fire... then it's calm again. Back to Hugh Grant and his girlfriend, back to the guy who looks like a caricature of Hugh Grant and his girlfriend. Back to the sneaky lady in the mansion, getting more and more vicious by the minute.
As our Lady Sylvia March reveals more of her true self, the better the movie gets. And there's more than one memorable scene in this Ken Russel movie. Plenty of phallus symbols, gore and cheap effects. How can you not love it? The Lair of the White Worm is so much fun. The dream sequences are fantastic in all their silliness, I love how casual (almost) everyone is taking all the strange things going on, and Amanda Donohoe is amazing. I actually liked Hugh Grant too. Never having understood what's so charming about him before that felt kind of strange. Maybe it's an age thing? I'm getting kind of old. Before I know it I will lust after guys like George Clooney as well. Scary thought.
